Congratulations.  You beat the disease.  You survived chemo, radiation, surgery, and more.  Now you join the many who the world calls survivors.  Your become more than Someone With a disease.  You have fought it and won.  Now you have to move forward.  Here are some tips to help you.

Emotional Health

Living as a survivor is a scary thing.  Many survivors admit to fearing a return of the disease.  This is normal.  Fortunately, you can work to overcome this fear.  This will happen when you learn to live in the moment and nurture your emotional health.  Talk to your doctor about your emotional health.  You may want to visit a counselor regularly.  And you might benefit from a few low dose drugs that could help you emotionally.

Share Your Story

One of the best ways to increase your emotional health is to share your story.  There is power in sharing.  Tell your story in your own way.  It can be very healing to talk about what you have been through.  When you share your survival story, you reaffirm the truth of your survival to yourself.  Over time, it will become more realistic.  Soon you will start to believe it.  This does not always happen over night, but it does happen when you open your mouth and share what you have experienced.

Be Patient

Additionally, try to be patient with yourself.  A lot of changes have occurred since you were diagnosed.  And much of these changes may be hard to get used to.  Many people struggle with physical changes.  Others experience environmental changes.  Whatever change you are struggling with, try to be patient.  Remember that no one is perfect.  Adjustments happen over time.

Enjoy life as a survivor.  Many people look up to you and admire you.  Don’t be afraid to tell them your story.

Towels were mostly white when I was a kid so bleach was a big item when it came to washing washcloths and towels. Kids are awfully hard on towels in particular because they do that just wetting their hands thing and then dry their still filthy, grubby, disgustingly dirty hands on them. So yes, kid’s towels in particular are going to need extra cleaning power of some sort.

That’s what they said the last time it was ‘new and improved’! How is it different now than it was then? Laundry detergents of every kind are constantly being ‘improved upon’. You might as well not buy the big industrial size because by the time you use it up they will have changed the formula twice already. But you can’t fault the detergent companies for wanting to tell you that your clothes will be cleaner, fresher, less wrinkled, softer, brighter… The list goes on. Fabric Softener Or No Fabric Softener?

Fabric softener is a funny thing. They don’t recommend it for towels, beds, rugs or pouches that are used for animals; some people insist that using a fabric softener lessens the absorption of certain materials; some people would rather go naked than not wear something with fabric softener (be it the old fashioned kind that you put in the wash machine or the dryer sheet that most of us use). The official answer for the absorption problem is no, fabric softener should not really be used on towels because it does discourage absorbency. Besides, it’s good to scrape off all those dead skin cells every now and then.

Toxicity is something that many eco friendly people worry about these days as well. Some fabric softeners contain harsh chemicals so here are few alternatives: linen, hemp, bamboo and cotton do fine by themselves, but synthetic fabrics encourage static; adding a cup of vinegar to the wash cycle can work but more people have found success with baking soda (half cup to a load).
