Bring your Garden Inside
Posted by Marty in Columbus News on 08 2nd, 2011| | No Comments »

There’s no longer any need to battle the elements just because you want a nice vegetable garden. And if you live in Wisconsin or another state where winter is the longest season of your life, this is particularly good news.

Lights, Water, Action

One of the coolest but strangest parts of hydroponics gardening is that there’s no need for soil. Yes you read that correctly. No dirt. You’ll still need light, plenty of it; carefully balanced PH levels; water; the proper nutrients and an abundance of humidity (but not so much as to encourage the growth of mold). It’s a slippery little slope at first but once you catch on you’ll wonder why you ever gardened outdoors. There are those in fact that even have the entire process automated. They set it up, let it do its thing and enjoy the results.

Of course you have to check on it every now and then just to make sure everything is working properly, but it’s still a far cry from the constant weeding and watering and pruning and ugh(!) of a regular outdoor garden. It’s simply perfect for those who don’t have the room out of doors or the perfect growing weather for their vegetable gardens.

I Kill Everything I Touch

Vegetables of course aren’t the only thing you can grow. Fruits and flowers are popular choices as well. So you weren’t blessed with a green thumb, eh? In that case, hydroponic gardening is perfect for you. First of all, everybody’s doing it so you should be able to find a font of information just by asking around or on the Internet. In addition, you can buy a ready made kit that will get you all setup and on your way.

They can’t make it any easier than that unless they come to your house and do it for you.

Great Habits for Younger Looking Skin
Posted by Marty in Columbus News on 07 19th, 2011| | No Comments »

s1

Everybody develops habits over their lifetimes, some healthy, others not so much. Healthy, younger looking skin practically depends on one's ability to fall into a dedicated skin care routine. Over time, for men and women alike, it could make the kind of difference that will have people guessing that you are 20 years younger than you really are.

Addition Through Subtraction

Sometimes this involves the principles of addition through subtraction. Smoking, eating fatty foods, reacting to stress and lack of sleep all contribute to the appearance of advanced aging. Cutting out bad habits is pretty much the same as picking up good ones. Diet, in particular, has a lot to do with our appearance. Your skin, like any other organ in your body, always works better when it is properly hydrated and nourished. Exercise, too, improves your overall well-being, providing stress relief and relaxation - who doesn't look better when they're feeling good?

Know What You're Getting Into

As far as taking care of the surface of your skin, the market is flooded with products, some of which even work. The highest price tag doesn't necessarily mean you're getting the best skin care. If your aesthetician's advice isn't helping, a trip to the dermatologist may be in order - either way, it's best to make informed decisions with regard to your skin. All it takes is a trip to your local salon for a soothing facial to get going in the right direction.

One last prescription for healthy skin is something that nobody will complain about: Sex. Sex brings about the release of three important, age-defying hormones into the bloodstream - endorphin, oxytocin and prolactin. A once-a-week regimen of intimacy never killed anyone (and if it did, they went out with a smile on their face, and healthy skin to boot).

Five Bad Habits for Your Skin
Posted by Marty in Columbus News on 07 16th, 2011| | No Comments »

s3

Everyone has the capacity to display self-defeating behavior. We know in our hearts that "one for the road" isn't a good idea, but we still hear about drunk drivers. We realize that being overweight is a health risk, but we still order dessert. We understand that we're already in a committed relationship, but we still ask for phone numbers. With regard to skin care, there are a some pretty bad habits out there that may seem innate or reflexive, and if we could simply change those ways we would benefit greatly from skin that has the physiological potential to look 20 years younger.

Another Good Reason to Quit

Smoking is one of the worst things you can do vis a vis the appearance of your skin, and it poses a myriad of other health risks besides. Smoking constricts the blood vessels in the outermost layers of the skin, decreasing blood flow, which deprives the skin cells of oxygen and vitamins. Nobody disputes that smoking is bad for you, but what about long, hot showers? Cleanliness is important, no doubt about it, but prolonged exposure to hot water can strip the oils from the skin, leaving it dry. Avoid strong soaps, pat yourself dry (instead of rubbing with the towel) and be careful when shaving.

Minimize Your Stress

It many not occur to most people that stress is a habit, but it is, and those who spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about their condition or position in life may be promoting premature aging. And, although it may seem like a natural tendency, using make-up to cover those effects can also have a negative impact on the skin - especially if it isn't removed before going to bed, or if expired cosmetics are used (yes, they have an expiration date).

Then there's the matter of trying too hard. Proper skin treatments, such as exfoliation, might be something best left to the professionals. Clean pores are absolutely part of the equation when it comes to overall skin care, but delicate tissues can be damaged if facials are overused or misapplied.

Many computer users own a variety of bulk USB devices, wireless keyboards, wireless mice, digital cameras plus other wireless devices in their homes or offices and one of the problems that they face is what to do when they want to connect all of these devices at the same time. The solution to this problem is using a USB Extender Hub.

How USB Extender Hubs Work

USB extender hubs are an excellent investment for any computer owner because they enable the computer owner to plug all of their bulk USB sticks and other devices into one central hub instead of into every USB port on their computer which can make the computer run slower. Every USB hub comes with a receiver which means that the computer user can connect the hub to their computer via a Cat5 cable and place the hub up to 150 feet away from their computer.

Easy to Use

USB extender hubs function on the principle of plug and play which means that all the computer owner has to do is connect the hub to their computer via a Cat5 cable and start using it right out of the box unlike other USB devices that require the computer user to download drivers to their computer or install software via a disk. The convenience that USB extender hubs offer the average computer user is huge. There’s nothing better than being able to plug in bulk USB memory sticks and other devices into the USB extender hub and free a computer from USB clutter.

Most USB extenders require the computer user to plug the hub into Port A on their computer and then they are free to start enjoying the convenience of the hub. Some computers might have a problem finding the hub when they first plug it into their computers. If this happens all the computer user should do is restart their computer and they should have no problem using the extender hub.

paint 5Seriously consider the options regarding interior decorating in Columbus--live in style with the decision to redecorate and improve the quality your living quarters by finding a quality interior decorating company in Columbus. Interior decorating is a fun and worthwhile investment that can add value to your home while treating you and your family to an inspired makeover of one room or several rooms. Besides deciding what sort of stylish theme you want to apply to your home--modern, elegant, rustic or bohemian--you will also be choosing the color of paint and design patterns if desired.

Choosing Colors and Effects

When choosing colors with which to paint your rooms, remember that colors do more than make walls look brand new! Colors also influence mood and set the ambience of rooms, which can make your home the only place in the world you want to be. Begin your color selection experience by taking home several paint examples from a remodeling company and comparing them to the furniture or wall hangings in the room you plan on redecorating. Unless you are going to purchase some new furniture or change the decor, these paint samples will help you narrow your choices down to two or three. If you are having trouble deciding what color to select, have a friend or a professional interior decorator to examine the color choice. Once you have chosen the color you want, take a small amount of it and paint a sizeable square on one of the walls. How does it look? Does it look as good during different times of the day when lighting changes?

Finish of the Paint

Three basic types of finish are available for paint--flat, semi-glossy/glossy and satin/eggshell. Flat finishes give the paint job a matte appearance, which tends not to reflect illumination and makes the wall appear perfectly smooth. Interior decorators will suggest a matte finish when there are minor imperfections visible on walls, since this does an excellent job of covering small cracks or grooves. Semi-glossy/glossy finishes are just exactly that--very shiny! This finish is predominantly used for trim or molding and adds a subtle brilliancy to a newly painted room. The most popular finish, however, is the satin/eggshell finish. This produces a light shiny quality that makes it easy to wipe off dirt or smears without causing spots of erosion to show up on the wall.

Remodeling companies will also calculate the amount of paint you will need to purchase, along with assisting you in any other interior decorating jobs you wish done to your home.

pro 17Promotional products are one of the best investments that any business can make because they have a longer lifespan than any other form of advertising that you can invest in. Recent studies have shown that 52% of consumers worldwide who received a promotional product did business with that company. Companies who have bought promotional products in the UK and other parts of the world have found that the key to success with promotional products is choosing products that people will continue to use long after they receive them.

Top Of The Mind Awareness

The key with any form of marketing, especially with promotional products is generating TOMA or Top Of The Mind Awareness with your future consumers. Your goal should be for your consumers to think of you when they need a product or service in your field or industry. Many large and small companies, especially in local areas can benefit from investing in promotional products even if they are just starting business in an area that’s heavily dominated by competition.

Return On Investment

“What’s the return on my investment?” This should be the number one question that any business owner asks when they invest in any form of marketing or advertising. With promotional products you can expect a much better ROI than other forms of advertising like television, radio or even Internet advertising. For example, the average cost per impression for a promotional baseball cap is just 0.002 cents. Compare this to the 0.019 cost per impression of most black and white advertisements in the average national magazine and you will realize that promotional marketing is totally worth your investment.

Remember to pick promotional items that your customers and future consumers will actually use often and don’t hesitate to give those items away frequently because each promotional item that you give away is just like planting an advertising seed that you will plant for your success.

Horse Racing Betting Terms
Posted by Marty in Columbus News on 03 15th, 2011| | No Comments »

With the Kentucky Derby coming up in May, many people are preparing to place their bets on the world's most popular horse racing event. Thousands of people will come from all over the globe to Kentucky just to see the race and participate in all the traditional events surrounding the race. Also, the amounts of bets made will no doubt be in the millions, whether they are placed at the track or online at one of the many sportsbook sites offering horse racing betting. Placing a bet means being familiar with some betting terms used in the sport of horse racing. Below are some of the more common ones heard at the track.

Betting Lingo

If you overhear someone being called a "bridge jumper" that means they are someone who bets a large amount of cash on one horse to show. That amount could be as high as $100,00 or more. "Bridge jumping" descriptively says that if the person loses, they may end up leaping from the closest bridge! A "daily double" is a bet that calls for the choice of winners of two consecutive races, generally the 1st and 2nd place winners. When someone is "in the money", the horse they picked has won either first, second or third place. A bettor placing a "pick six or more" type of bet means all winners of all the races must be picked by the bettor in order to win. A "superfecta" is a bet in which you must choose the first four horses that finish the race in the exact order they finish. Information that will help fit into the culture of horse racing can be found at about.com.

More Betting Lingo

Betting across the board means that you are betting on a horse to win, place or show--that is, finish in first, second or third place. Wiki states that if the horse wins, the bettor can collect his winnings in these three ways; or if the horse comes in second, two ways. When a race ends in a "dead heat", this means the top two or three horses crossed the finish line so closely together that only a photo of them crossing the line will be able to detect who actually won. Watch out for "touts" who roam the field before a horse race, also. They are individuals saying they have important information regarding the race and offer to sell it it you.

Experiencing a horse race firsthand is a good way to familiarize yourself with betting terminology so you will now exactly what type of bet you are placing. In addition, reading the betting odds in the track magazine will also assist you in the wagering process.

Porche – An Electric Car Pioneer
Posted by Marty in Columbus News on 03 6th, 2011| | No Comments »

bike 3When the name Porche comes to mind any car people think of the one of the most popular and prestigious auto makers in the world whose cars are a symbol of luxury and performance that every car enthusiast has wanted at one time or another. One of the things that’s not known about the Porche name is that the founder Ferdinand Porche was one of the first pioneers of the wheel hub motor.

Lohner-Porche

The historic Lohner-Porche was innovative for its day. The two wheel hub motors on the front wheels of this car had an output of around 2.5 horsepower and generated 120 RPM. The battery could travel about 35 miles between recharges and the car could get up to an average speed of 45 miles per hour. This car appeared at the World’s Fair in 1900 and became what many people thought would be the car of the future...

The First Hybrid Car

Ferdinand Porche was also one of the first pioneers of the hybrid car when he developed an electric wheel hub motor car that got its power from a gasoline driven generator. He called this process “System Mixt” and he set many land speed records in Europe racing this car. Sadly, this hybrid car never gained much interest because car companies realized that gasoline engine powered cars had more power and were easier to use than hybrid cars but they were not as efficient..

In 2011 the Hybrid car and wheel hub motors are needed now more than ever as instability in the Middle East is once again driving up oil prices and creating more of a demand for alternative sources of transportation that are not dependent on fossil fuels. Wheel hub motors are also available for bicycle riders who want to turn their bicycles and enjoy an alternative source of transportation in the city or town that they live in.
